(서울=연합뉴스) 노재현 기자 = "북한 경제는 아직 주변 국가만큼 발전하지 못했지만 경제 건설에 대한 새로운 강조는 중요한 변화의 신호입니다."
미국 AP통신의 진 리(43·여) 초대 평양지국장은 19일 방영되는 보도전문채널 뉴스Y와 인터뷰에서 북한의 개혁·개방 가능성을 묻는 말에 경제 분야를 꼽으며 "북한의 개혁 잠재력을 알기 위해 우리가 주목해야 할 부분"이라고 밝혔다.
그는 "정치 분야나 사회적 문제, 인권 문제, 북핵 문제는 지금으로선 개혁의 여지가 적다"며 "하지만 사회 전반에 파장을 미칠 수 있는 경제 분야는 변화의 가능성이 있다"고 설명했다.
리 전 지국장은 또 김정은 체제 들어 북한의 가장 큰 변화로 휴대전화 사용자 증가와 평양 주민의 다양한 패션, 스포츠를 중시하는 사회 분위기를 꼽았다.
평양에서 수차례 김정은 국방위원회 제1위원장을 직접 보면서 느낀 인상에 대해서는 '자신감'이라는 단어로 표현했다.
그는 김 제1위원장에 대해 "젊은 사람치고는 엄청난 자신감을 갖고 있다"며 "조부모 정도 되는 사람들을 대하는 모습이 참 흥미로웠는데 믿을 수 없을 정도의 자신감을 보였다"고 평가했다.
김 제1위원장이 젊고 건강하다는 점을 과시하는 데 거리낌이 없다며 "말년에 아팠던 아버지 김정일과는 대조적인 이미지"라고 부연했다.

또 북한 주민 사이에 김 제1위원장의 부인인 리설주에 관한 소문이 많다고 리 전 지국장이 전했다.
그는 "북한 주민들은 리설주를 유행을 만들어가는 사람으로 생각하면서 그녀의 헤어스타일이나 패션이 북한에서 허용되는 것이라고 생각한다"며 리설주가 존 F. 케네디 전 미국 대통령의 부인이었던 재클린 케네디와 비슷한 점이 있다고 말했다.
특히 리설주가 작년 말 딸을 출산한 것으로 보인다며 "북한 주민 사이에서도 리설주의 출산을 두고 이런저런 얘기가 많았다"고 소개했다.
리 전 지국장은 평양에서 북한 당국의 기사 검열은 없었다고 밝혔다.
그는 "북한 당국은 우리 기사나 사진을 사전 검열하는 것이 문제가 된다는 것을 알고 있었기 때문"이라고 설명했다.
그는 2012년 1월 서방 언론 가운데 최초로 북한에 개설된 AP통신의 평양지국장으로 북한을 다양하게 취재했고 지난달 평양지국장 자리를 에릭 탈매지(51)에게 물려주고 나서 서울에서 한반도 문제에 관한 기사를 쓰고 있다.

Al Jazeera: The first Instagram videos from North Korea →
North Korea is known for the way it cautiously and strategically projects its image to the world. However, the first Instagram videos coming out of the country offer unfiltered peeks into what many call the "Hermit Kingdom".
As the only western media organisation with a bureau in North Korea, the Associated Press has unparalleled access to the country. Bureau chief Jean Lee and photographer David Guttenfelder have documented short scenes on Instagram, mainly in the capital city of Pyongyang, ahead of the 60th anniversary of the Korean War armistice.

Back in February, the AP’s David Guttenfelder and Jean Lee were some of the first to begin uploading Instagram photos from inside the closed off country of North Korea. A rare look inside a normally very mysterious country, both of their Instagram accounts became the subject of many a headline.
Now, a few months later, the same two photographers are taking advantage of Instagram’s new video capabilities to give us rare, unfiltered, 15-second glimpses of life inside Kim Jong-un’s isolated country.
As with the first Instagram photos, the first videos reveal the same “curious, strangely beautiful, or melancholy details” the two photographers spoke of in February.
From a panoramic view of Pyongyang, to soldiers patrolling the demilitarized zone, to a restaurant worker adding up receipts while the TV behind her plays military videos, each clip opens a small window into the lives of North Korean citizens.
